President Donald Trump on Twitter called the Democratic response "shameful". They would never allow a Democrat to get away with flattering Communist dictators, paying hush money to alleged mistresses, encouraging foreign interference in US elections, denigrating the Federal Bureau of Investigation, spending money by executive decree that Congress hasn't appropriated or a thousand other sins.
"We can't be only upset with Trump". Over the years, I and many political cartoonists have done critical cartoons on Israel, Palestinians and their leaders.
Pew Research Center says that among Jewish voters in the 2018 midterms, 79 per cent supported Democratic candidates. As a regular contributor to discussions of issues that are capturing headlines in the news, Meghan McCain became emotional when addressing the rising tide of global anti-Semitism and especially the reprehensible utterings of Rep Omar. In 2012, she tweeted: "Israel has hypnotized the world, may Allah awaken the people and help them see the evil doings of Israel". She has denied charges of prejudice toward Jews or Israel. No, Omar, Tlaib and Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez have made themselves suspect due to their crude approach to criticizing Israel and its American supporters. This post is not meant to relitigate those issues but to reach out to Jewish Democrats who agree that Omar's statements were anti-Semitic and who have been frustrated and hurt by the response of party leaders.
But Omar seems to have learned nothing from that incident.
"I do not believe she understood the full weight of her words".
U.S. Rep. Mark Pocan, D-Wisconsin, seems to equate homophobia with the plight of the Palestinians.
It also mentions her links to the Council on American-Islamic Relations, which "was listed as an unindicted co-conspirator in the largest terrorist fundraising operation in the history of the U.S". Do you have examples of criticisms of Israel that have even been received without pushback? This is an old and ugly anti-Semitic canard.
"I thought yesterday's vote by the House was disgrace", Trump said, "because the Democrats have become an anti-Israel party, they've become an anti-Jewish party, and I thought that vote was a disgrace and so did everybody else if you get an honest answer".
Fresh from a bruising fight over comments by her criticized as anti-Semitic, Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar jumped back into the frying pan over the weekend, appearing to level harsh criticism at former United States president Barack Obama, then claiming she had been misquoted before seemingly backtracking. Taken literally, the resolution implies that the majority of the House of Representatives supported bigotry prior to Thursday's 407-23 vote. King was stripped of his committee assignments, but Omar will remain on the Foreign Affairs Committee.
In one version of the resolution rebuking her said the "myth of dual loyalty. has been used to marginalize and persecute the Jewish people for centuries for being a stateless people". As I have often written before, what you say in such sensitive matters can matter less than what people hear.
On Friday, she double down, saying, "I don't think our colleague is anti-Semitic" but that she "didn't realize" that her words were "fraught with meaning". Wrong. It's perfectly legitimate to criticize Israel.
The vote comes less than a week after Representative Ilhan Omar, one of the first Muslim women elected to Congress, made statements at a Washington event that were denounced by some as anti-Semitic.
