At least the short film categories provide a glimpse into a possible future for female filmmakers: Rayka Zehtabchi was nominated for her documentary "Period. He'd be, certainly, celebrating with some big numbers". The artsy, subtitled film led the nominations Tuesday alongside "The Favourite", with 10 nods apiece.
Other box-office hits among the eight nominees for the movie industry's top prize included musical remake A Star is Born and rock biopic Bohemian Rhapsody.
Viggo Mortensen (Green Book) and Cooper (A Star Is Born) are also contenders, with Willem Dafoe (At Eternity's Gate) rounding out the field as a dark horse. "The academy is clearly honouring blockbuster films this year", he said, "and is acknowledging their contributions to the art of filmmaking and thus recognizing the level of talent involved". Toni Collette's buzzy Hereditary performance was, as some expected, not nominated because when's the last time a horror film got any awards season love at all?
For the first time in Academy Awards history, there is still no host slated to emcee the upcoming ceremony.
Between her work in bringing back a beloved childhood character to great praise by critics and audiences alike and her portrayal of a terrified mother grasping to save her family in "A Quiet Place", you'd think Blunt would have been a shoo-in.
