The streaming service gave the project a straight-to-series order, which is described as a workplace comedy focusing on a group of people who must develop a sixth branch of the military, inspired by Trump's desire to develop a "Space Force" military branch. The 67-second video then explains that the show will be about "the men and women who have to figure it out".
"This is a giant step toward inspiring future generations and toward reclaiming America's proud destiny in space", Trump had said in a statement announcing the plan. What's more, he's doing it through a new collaboration with The Office executive producer Greg Daniels. They report that The Office is still extremely popular on Netflix, leading the streamer to pay as much as they needed to secure an Original Series starring Carrell.
There's no release date set for Space Force yet, so keep an eye out. There's only one problem; as an accompanying teaser trailer notes, their mission is rather unclear. Notably, the actor will reportedly receive over $1 million per episode, setting a new record for TV salaries. Then there's the issue of the potential weaponization of outer space, as the creation of the Space Force could trigger an worldwide arms race. Its deliberate ties to actual U.S. policy suggest opportunities to openly mock existing elected officials, but we may come to find that Space Force is staged, say, 10 or 20 years in the future; again, details are terribly vague at this point.
