A Nationwide outage reaching from NY to California has been causing headaches since early Thursday morning.
It appeared that most of the trouble was in the West.
A nationwide outage affecting CenturyLink customers temporarily impacted 911 calling capability for cellphones across the country and in MA, state police said.
Law-enforcement and county officials are advising residents to have alternate emergency numbers on hand just in case. The outage affected only wireless 911 calls, not landline calls, CNN affiliate WBZ reported.
As of Friday morning, CenturyLink said it has yet to complete restoration work on issues that caused a nationwide outage.
Thousands of customers around the country, including Louisiana and Wyoming, are still experiencing outages Friday morning, according to Newsweek.
"When an emergency strikes, it's critical that Americans are able to use 911 to reach those who can help", chariman Ajit Pai said in an FCC press release. But the company says it does not yet know the extent of service outages. Downdectector.com, a website that tracks realtime outages of internet providers, said affected customers were in Denver, Portland, Seattle, Los Angeles, Dallas, Salt Lake City, Albuquerque, Boise, Chicago, Phoenix and other areas. "I have also spoken with CenturyLink to underscore the urgency of restoring service immediately".
