Smith applauded Meyer's level of success - he has an 82-9 record in seven seasons - and impact at Ohio State.
Ohio State announced this morning that Meyer will retire after the Rose Bowl.
The first three games of this season were coached by Meyer's offensive coordinator, Ryan Day, who will succeed Meyer moving forward, because Ohio State slapped its iconic coach with a three-game suspension for his failure to supervise one of his assistants, Zach Smith, who was repeatedly accused of domestic violence. He was a quarterback (for Chip Kelly) at New Hampshire and coached at his alma mater, Boston College, Florida (as a graduate assistant for Meyer), Temple, the Philadelphia Eagles and the San Francisco 49ers before coming to Ohio State in 2017. In 2014, Meyer had brain surgery to address a congenital arachnoid cyst, but he still deals with occasional painful headaches.
On Sunday, Meyer talked about coaching the Buckeyes at the Rose Bowl, something he has never done before. He has three national championships on his resume - one at Ohio State in 2014 and two at Florida in 2006 and 2008 - to go along with two undefeated seasons (2004 at Utah, 2012 at Ohio State). Meyer said his decision had to come before the early signing period opens December 19. But to do so Meyer would have to take a step back for the first time in his head coaching career. Meyer recorded his second flawless 12-0 season.
When he left Florida, Meyer cited health concerns as the main reason.
He has also won a trio of national championships. North Carolina State coach Urban Meyer.
Ohio State followed that with five straight wins, including a rout of archrival MI that gave the Buckeyes another division title and then pulled away for an easy win over Northwestern in the Big Ten Championship. But on the day Urban Meyer supposedly retired, the first thought that crossed everybody's mind was, "Yeah, right".
His time at Ohio State wasn't without controversy. While he said the headaches he has been dealing with started to hit "real hard" last season and again this year. he is young by coaching standards at age 54. Asked if he would definitely return to Ohio State next year, he answered, "Yes".
Florida State - Willie Taggart just finished his first season at Florida State and it resulted in the Seminoles 36-year bowl streak being snapped. Meyer won a title in Columbus as well. On the same day, Day told ESPN he planned to interview for other openings to become a head coach. Day coached the team in Meyer's absence.
In April, Ohio State announced Meyer had signed a two-year contract extension that would keep him at the helm through 2022.
