Former president Obama met with Bush at his home in Houston on Tuesday afternoon, three days before the 41st presidents death.
Prior to entering politics, Bush Sr. served in the Navy during World War II.
The Bush legacy is one of service and honor, says Brad Blakeman, former deputy assistant to President George W. Bush.
With the election of George W. Bush in 2000, the senior Bush joined John Adams as both President and Presidential Father.
President Trump tweeted his condolences to the Bush family, saying the president had "inspired" generations of U.S. citizens.
In 1980, Bush campaigned for the Republican nomination for President. Before that, he served for eight years as Vice-President under Ronald Reagan. Soon after his death, students at Texas A&M University - home of the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum - created their own points of light through a candlelight vigil in memory of the nation's 41st president. He nearly immediately separated himself from his benefactor Reagan, calling for a "kinder, gentler nation" - to which Nancy Reagan was famously said to reply, "kinder and gentler than what?"
Remembrances also poured in from other public figures and global leaders, perhaps most notably former Soviet premier Mikhail Gorbachev, who led the Soviet Union during Bush's tenure. While Bush hailed the march of democracy, he insisted on restraint in U.S. policy toward the group of new nations. He was a very good man, a great President & a warm hearted, generous American patriot who was a strong ally & friend of the UK.

"He did a lot for his nation, he did a lot for the world and of course relations between Australia and the United States have always been strong and were certainly strong during his presidency", Mr McCormack said."I send my sincerest condolences to his family, and to the American people". Twenty months later, in 1992, the Republican Bush lost his bid for re-election to Democrat Bill Clinton, whose folksy manner and focus on the economy struck a chord with many Americans and made Bush seem disconnected from voters for focusing on foreign policy over domestic issues.
