Not much is left in Paradise after a ferocious wildfire roared through the Northern California town, levelling entire neighborhoods.

More than 250,000 have been evacuated across the state of California, which is now battling three wildfires, fanned by strong winds.

Late Friday Butte County Sheriff Korey Honea updated the Camp Fire death toll.

A Red Flag Warning for extreme fire weather danger will remain in effect for that same period for Ventura and Los Angeles counties, according to the National Weather Service.

Rescuers could be seen removing remains over a period of several hours in Paradise and placing them in a black hearse.

The 100,000-acre Camp Fire has already killed at least nine people, injured three firefighters and destroyed almost 6,500 homes, according to a Cal Fire media release - making it the most destructive fire in the state's history.

From miles around, acrid smoke could be seen in the sky around Paradise, the sun barely visible. Friends houses have burned. Trump added. On Saturday, Trump also declared a state of emergency in California.

The fire broke out on Thursday north west of Los Angeles and roared south, jumping the USA 101 freeway early on Friday and sweeping into the Santa Monica Mountains.

Two monster wildfires burned out of control on Saturday in northern and southern California, having already killed at least nine people and forced hundreds of thousands to flee their homes.

Dozens of other people were reported missing.

They estimate they will need three weeks to fully contain the blaze.

In Paradise, which had about 26,000 residents, the fire destroyed most homes and half the businesses, the town's mayor Jody Jones said on CNN, describing a long period of recovery ahead.

"The wind shifted this way, and it came down, and within three minutes, it went from "Let's monitor it" to we were running for our lives", Lou Morris said.

Among the celebrity homes reportedly damaged - if not destroyed - was the home of Caitlyn Jenner, who posted an Instagram video reporting that she was in a safe house, but wasn't sure what has become of her home.

It was unclear how many homes have been evacuated within the City of Los Angeles.

Reality TV star Kim Kardashian West, who lives just north of coastal Malibu, revealed she was forced to flee her home.

"There is no reason for these massive, deadly and costly forest fires in California except that forest management is so poor", Trump tweeted.

The Calabasas campus is also evacuated.

Last month, after Trump rekindled his criticism of California's wildfire prevention steps, a spokesman for Brown said Trump's comments lacked credibility. The other victims were found near or inside homes that burned. No new growth was reported on the larger of the two fires, which stands at 109 square miles (282 square kilometers), and firefighters now have the blaze 5 percent contained.

Butte County Sheriff's Office said an evacuation ordered had been issued for the small communities of Stirling City and Inskip.

"Certainly, we don't forget our experiences from the past", he said, "but again, we're not letting that deter us either, in what our jobs are and what our mission is".
