The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, and Prince Mohammed Bin Salman Bin Abdulaziz, Crown Prince, the Vice President of the Council of Ministers and Minister of Defence of Saudi Arabia, have telephoned Saleh Khashoggi, the son of the late journalist Jamal Khashoggi to express their condolences on the death of his father, Jamal Khashoggi. An hour later, another Saudi official attributed the death to a chokehold. The Saudi stock exchange plunges as much as 7 per cent at one point.
"We are determined to uncover every stone".
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said that he will "go into detail" about the Khashoggi case in a speech in parliament on Tuesday, the same day a glitzy investment forum in Riyadh spearheaded by Prince Mohammed is to take place. "This was an operation where individuals ended up exceeding the authorities and responsibilities they had", Jubeir said on Fox. They also contradicted assertions in Turkish media leaks that Khashoggi was tortured, killed and dismembered inside the consulate, claims the kingdom had rejected as "baseless".
Meanwhile, Maria Adebahr, spokesperson for German's foreign ministry, said on Monday that Saudi Arabia's ambassador was invited to their ministry to convey Berlin's expectations on the matter.
After nearly two seeks of silence following the disappearance of Khashoggi, Saudi Arabia last week said Khashoggi was killed during a botched questioning. Saudi Ambassador to the U.S. Prince Khalid bin Salman, a brother of the crown prince, wrote october 8 that Khashoggi had left, and that claims the kingdom "have detained him or killed him are absolutely false, and baseless".
"Nobody has told me he's responsible", Trump said.
"I think we really need to discontinue our arms sales to Saudi Arabia and have a long and serious discussion about whether or not they want to be an ally or they want to be an enemy", he said, adding that sanctions "don't go far enough".
On the other hand, France, the United Kingdom and Germany issued a joint statement denouncing Saudi Arabia's alleged involvement in the incident, urging the country to provide more explanations on Khashoggi's death.
"Erdogan and Trump agreed the Khashoggi case needs to be cleared up with all aspects", Anadolu said.
CNN aired the footage on Monday, citing a Turkish official as describing the man as a "body double" and a member of a 15-man Saudi team sent to Istanbul to target the writer.
Recall that in early October it became known that in Istanbul mysteriously disappeared Saudi journalist Jamal Haskaj who criticized the Royal family of Saudi Arabia. The attackers reportedly rolled up his body in a rug and gave it to a local person for disposal.
The state-run broadcaster TRT later also reported that a man who entered the consulate building was seen leaving the building in Khashoggi's clothes.
The Saudi government's ever-changing narrative has prompted a massive global outcry.
