Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has again questioned his players' desire - amid reports he has told Paul Pogba he will not captain the club again.
The United manager has been angered by Pogba's post-match comments and his performance in the 1-1 draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
"The only truth is I made the decision of Paul not to be the second captain anymore", added Mourinho. "The players were happy with that decision and the reasons behind the manager's decision".
The night got off to the ideal start for United, though, as Juan Mata found the net in the 3rd minute but Harry Wilson's stunning free-kick followed by Marriott's 85th-minute effort gave Derby the advantage at the death.
Phil Jones missed the crucial penalty in the shootout with the score at 8-7 and Mourinho admitted he was not confident of winning the tie once the centre-back stepped up.
I know I lost the ball (for their goal). "Don't get me wrong, the club have supported Jose Mourinho and given him a lot of money, but you can not go half-hearted". "We are here to attack", Pogba told the media after the match.
'I think these are the games everybody wants to play in, and we'll go into that game with a lot of confidence'. We had the personality to take penalties and play the way we did.
It levelled for Derby before Romero was sent off eight minutes later.
"I am trying to build a group to be successful and nights like this are incredible".
