Chuck Grassley of Iowa, has given Christine Blasey Ford more time to decide on the terms of her appearance.
In a series of tweets that have since been deleted, Whelan said Ford may have confused Kavanaugh for a different classmate, one that he named in the tweets along with the address of the house where he suggested the reported attack had taken place.
In a speech on the Senate floor, McConnell echoed Kavanaugh's own line, repeatedly calling the allegations a "smear campaign".
The New Yorker article, co-authored by Jane Mayer and Ronan Farrow, says "Senior Republican staffers also learned of the allegation last week" without specifying who the staffers worked for.
Trump said Monday (Sept 24) that the charges against Kavanaugh were "totally political" and has described him as "one of the finest people".
Before the agreement had been announced, Ford's lawyers said she had agreed to "provide her first-hand knowledge of Brett Kavanaugh's sexual misconduct next week".
The New Yorker magazine reported on Sunday evening that a 53-year-old woman, Deborah Ramirez, who attended university with Kavanaugh, has alleged that the judge appeared to have thrust his genitals in her face at a drunken party during their freshman year in 1983-4 academic calendar. Separately, an attorney for another woman said his client had information about Kavanaugh's behavior at parties at high school parties and wanted to testify as well. He has also denied allegations by a woman who claimed Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her when they were both high school teenagers in 1982.
The committee said it would not negotiate on other points, though, including Ms Ford's desire for additional witnesses and a request to testify after, not before, Mr Kavanaugh.
That's according to a person briefed on the matter who isn't authorized to discuss it by name.
"I am with Judge Kavanaugh, and I look forward to a vote", Trump said.
One of the male classmates who Ramirez said egged on Kavanaugh denied any memory of the party.
"We can say with confidence that if the incident Debbie alleges ever occurred, we would have seen or heard about it-and we did not", the statement read.
White House spokesperson Kerri Kupec said in a statement, "This 35-year-old, uncorroborated claim is the latest in a coordinated smear campaign by the Democrats created to tear down a good man. Editors from the New Yorker contacted some of us because we are the people who would know the truth, and we told them that we never saw or heard about this". Some of us were also friends with Debbie Ramirez during and after her time at Yale. The same day the Senate Judiciary Committee set a hearing about a decadesold allegation of sexual assault against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, more allegations of sexual misdeeds from women in his past emerged to cause more turbulence for Republican efforts to make him a justice.
"We are aware of significant evidence of multiple house parties in the Washington, D.C., area during the 1980s" during which Kavanaugh and others "would participate in the targeting of women with alcohol/drugs in order to allow a "train" of men to subsequently gang rape them", Avenatti wrote. She said she hadn't spoken with Ramirez for about ten years, but that the two women had been close all through college, and Kavanaugh had remained part of what she called their "larger social circle".
