Taking aim at Trump's campaign slogan, "Make America Great Again", she said McCain's America was always great.
Several people close to Mr. Trump also were in the audience for the ceremony, including his daughter Ivanka and her husband, Jared Kushner, as well as White House Chief of Staff John Kelly and Defense Secretary James Mattis. McCain was known for making many friends across party lines, but he was decidedly not friendly with President Donald Trump.
On Sunday, McCain will return to the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, for a private funeral and burial at the cemetery there.

And by design, McCain asked Obama and Bush to deliver eulogies while the family made clear that Trump was not welcome.
Every aspect of the senator's weeklong memorial carried political and personal significance, including his pall bearers Saturday.
McCain denounced him for using language that "fired up the crazies", while Trump said McCain was a "dummy" who had barely managed to graduate from the US Naval Academy.
Eulogizers, citing McCain's honor, courage, patriotic service, obstinacy, humor, reverence for freedom and contempt for bullies, presented the Arizona Republican as the personification of America itself.
John McCain's procession has made a stop at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial on the way to his service at Washington National Cathedral, and his wife, Cindy, has placed a wreath on the memorial.
Earlier Saturday, Meghan McCain, daughter of the late Arizona Republican, had alluded to Trump's slogan during her eulogy for her father, who died of brain cancer at age 81 on August 25. Both men had denied McCain's presidential aspirations.
