As for Woods, his remarkable revival could now be capped by a Ryder Cup wild card pick, which would mean him foregoing the role of vice-captain already bestowed on him by United States captain Jim Furyk long before anyone expected the summer the former world No 1 has had.
That leaves four captain's selections up for grabs, which Furyk will hand out next month.
Woods wants to be hitting some shots, too.
Thomas has received his due plaudits for his accomplishments in the last two years - shooting 59 in Hawaii, 63 at Erin Hills, winning eight times, taking the FedExCup, and collecting a Player of the Year Award.
"When I look at my captain's picks, I'll be looking at guys that have had a great body of work this year, guys that are playing well and maybe hot players at the time", Furyk said.
"I don't care what anybody else says".
"I had to kind of figure this out on my own and it's been really hard - a lot harder than people think", he said.
The 25-year-old is without a win since victory in the Open at Royal Birkdale last year and 12 months on there would be no repeat at Carnoustie, where he went into the final round with a share of the lead but stumbled to a closing, birdie-free 76.
"Our captain has some decisions to make after the first playoff events", Woods said.
"I want to make sure I have five vice-captains there", Furyk said.
"What is important is how well Tiger has played", Furyk said. Sixth place at the Open Championship, a second place at the PGA.
After years of battling injuries and difficulties in his personal life, Woods shot a 64 on Sunday, his best-ever performance in the final round of a major tournament.
"I remember I went to the British Open when Ben Curtis won (in 2003)".
Meanwhile, Koepka was making back-to-back birdies at 15 and 16 to get to 16 under and seize control of the tournament.
He also joined Jordan Spieth, Woods, Nicklaus and Tom Watson as the only players with three majors before turning 30 since World War II.
Team USA are the current Ryder Cup holders, following their 17-11 win over Team Europe at Hazeltine National Golf Club in 2016.
The first three wild cards will be named after the Dell Technologies Championship on September 3 and the final selection announced following the BMW Championship on September 9.
Furyk sounded excited about the eight who have made a team loaded with talent.
Woods playing - and playing well - has been gold for golf's TV ratings. "There aren't that many players in any sport that transcend".
