James expects the opening of the school, which will cater to third and fourth graders, to be one of the greatest moments of his life. Now, the day is finally here and kids are pouring into I Promise for the first time.
The school, the I Promise School, was launched in coordination with Akron Public Schools. I've always felt like that was one of the historic franchises. Ten-year-olds out here hooping, why you feeling like this? It was important for the foundation to help us and to look at something bigger. Hopefully Monday's school opening is just the first of many more great days for the three-time National Basketball Association champ in Northeast Ohio.
"I know these kids basically more than they know themselves".
"They're going to experience things that I didn't experience", James said. "I walked the same streets. I went through the same emotions - the good, the bad, the adversity, and everything that these kids are going through".
The 33-year-old this summer left the Cleveland Cavaliers for the second time in his career, before moving to Hollywood on a four-year, $154million (£117m) deal.
"You look at the Lakers", he said. They noted that he really liked L.A.'s young players and cap situation moving forward in addition to his connecting with Magic and respecting the franchise's legacy. "And for it all to come to fruition at this point, I think timing is everything".
As it turns out, Wade may have been there as an act of quid pro quo, because no sooner than Bronny's game wrapped did the James gang switch courts and focus to Zaire Wade, Dwyane's son.
