This is Kerber's first Wimbledon title following her 6-3, 6-3 victory over seven-time champion Williams. Just like she did in the quarterfinals (when she stared down Giorgi for having the audacity to ask for another moment to get ready for the serve), Serena tried to intimidate her way into the match, smacking a ball directly at Kerber early in the second set.
Just 10 months after giving birth, Williams can complete an incredible comeback as she bids to become the first mother to win the tournament for 38 years. Markle and her sister-in-law Kate Middleton participated in a standing ovation as the players walked onto the court.
On Saturday, Williams was supported by several celebrity friends at Centre Court.
It's unbelievable and I'm sure you'll have your next Grand Slam title soon. Angelique Kerber has been on fire so far, and leads Serena after one set.
The 2017 US Open runner-up had knocked out eight-time champion Roger Federer in the quarter-finals, also in five sets, saving a match point along the way.
If anyone would be able to return from such a debilitating experience, it would be Serena.
'If you look at it that way, it was probably really the only way to schedule it, yeah'.
"Every time I go out there, I want to, I guess, take a giant step forward", she said.
The German, who won the Australian and US Open titles in 2016, added another to her tally with a convincing victory in the SW19 showpiece. Williams was vying for an eighth career Wimbledon title, after missing the Grand Slam tennis tournament past year while pregnant.
Serena Williams cried after she dedicated her Wimbledon performance "to all the moms out there" after reaching the final just ten months after almost dying during childbirth.
But it was all about Kerber as she absorbed everything Williams threw at her and counter-punched in very effective fashion.
Kerber was the worst possible matchup for Serena, as she presented a much different challenge than the six women Serena defeated en route to the final.
"I just like to tell all the moms, like, I had such a long struggle to come back, and it was really hard".
'Not knowing how this match would go, two hours, three hours, I don't think they could put the men's semi-final behind the women because they have to come back the next day.
Williams played doubles with her sister Venus Williams at the Fed Cup in February.
@serenawilliams will be holding a trophy again soon-she's got the greatest one waiting at home for her -and our family knows she'll win many more trophies, too.
