The long-awaited report faulted the Federal Bureau of Investigation and its former director James Comey over the handling of the Hillary Clinton email probe in 2016 - and concluded that two agents working under Comey showed a "willingness to take official action to impact" Trump's election chances.
In messages exchanged over the FBI's internal system, agents and attorneys involved in the FBI's 2016 investigation into Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server insulted President Donald Trump's supporters and partially blamed themselves for potentially swaying the election with their probe.
"The IG Report totally destroys James Comey and all of his minions, including the great lovers, Peter Strzok and Lisa Page, who started the disgraceful Witch Hunt against so many innocent people", Trump tweeted Saturday. "No he's not. We'll stop it".
President Trump immediately seized on the report to justify his decision to fire Comey just six months after Election Day.
The report looked at how the FBI handled its investigation into Clinton's email practices and whether she mishandled classified information through an unofficial, private email account. Wray said the Federal Bureau of Investigation is going to review the inspector generals' findings and the Federal Bureau of Investigation will take appropriate action to hold people accountable if need be.
But he also found that Comey did not exhibit political bias or try to influence the election, nor did Horowitz contest the decision not to charge Clinton with a crime.
Strzok and Page would go on to work for Special Counsel Robert Mueller's "Russiagate" investigation, before being let go for their partisan text messages. The report says the attorney left that investigation in late February 2018, shortly after the inspector general provided Mueller with some of the instant messages they had discovered.
"The end result was wrong", Trump said of the report.
"When you read the report, it's nearly like Comey, he goes point after point about how guilty Hillary is, and then he said, 'But we're not going to do anything about it.' The IG report was a horror show, I thought that one line of conclusion was ridiculous", Trump said. However, Trump later said that he had the FBI's Russian Federation probe in mind when he dismissed Comey. Trump bragged: "I did a great job this weekend" in his summit meeting with Kim.
Comey made an appearance at the MSP Airport Thursday. While Republicans blasted his initial decision to exonerate Clinton, Democrats blamed the former FBI director for costing them the presidential election by reopening the investigation so close to the election.
"We found no evidence that the conclusions by the prosecutors were affected by bias or other improper considerations", the report said.
