"Despite receiving a life sentence, Alice worked hard to rehabilitate herself in prison, and act as a mentor to her fellow inmates", the White House said in a statement.
It also said that she has accepted responsibility for her behavior and has been a model prisoner.
She was released hours after the White House announced that Trump had commuted her sentence, running to greet her family with her arms opened wide for a group hug outside the federal prison in Aliceville, Alabama.
Alice Marie Johnson is serving a life sentence in prison for first-time, nonviolent drug offenses. "It's time to go home!'" Catina Johnson told CNN in a phone call on her way to pick up her mother. "And in Alice's case, it is a punishment that absolutely did not fit the crime".
Kardashian West told the Mic that while meeting with Trump, he "really spent the time to listen to our case that we were making for Alice".
"If you've noticed, I keep touching her because it's hard to believe she's actually here", said Catina Scales, Johnson's daughter.
During his first year and half in office he has issued a number of pardons, however, mostly involving high-profile cases.
Johnson says she already has plans to work, wants to write plays and catch up where she left off. He pardoned the late heavyweight boxer Jack Johnson, controversial former Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio and Lewis "Scooter" Libby, a former top aide to then-Vice President Dick Cheney.
"Her commutation and forthcoming release is inspirational and gives hope to so many others who are also deserving of a second chance", Kardashian West said.
Kardashian West arrived at the White House for a meeting with presidential senior adviser Jared Kushner, the president's son-in-law.
"This is a miracle day, this is one of the greatest days of my life, the most unexpected thing to happen to me in my life".
