Police did not say how the teen died, but that she was "brutally attacked" in her home.
Salt Lake City police say Shaun French, 24, is wanted for questioning in the homicide of Baleigh Bagshaw, 15, who was killed Monday afternoon.
"It was a very violent and brutal attack that occurred here in the home", Salt Lake City Police Sgt. Brandon Shearer told reporters on Tuesday, calling it a "horrendous crime".
An arrest warrant was issued Tuesday for French, charging him with three counts of unlawful sexual activity with a minor. "And then the phone went dead". "At that time, the mother called a neighbor to go check on Baileigh, and who also contacted police". Police found the teen dead at the house, Fox 13 reports.
The court papers say that between February 1 and April 10 of 2017, French, had sexual relations with Bagshaw while living with her in the house of her mother. Police say he was "lying in wait" for the teen. Her mom then called police and asked them to check in on the home. It's unclear if the attacker was waiting inside or outside of the home at the time.
"I can't even guess what the mother would be going through right now", Shearer added.
One of the reasons the felony warrant was obtained was to help facilitate French's extradition back to Utah in the event he was apprehended out-of-state, according to Shearer. "Our hearts and thoughts are with her and the whole family through this frightful ordeal".
Photos of French and his vehicle were sent out, and he was arrested late Wednesday morning by officers from the Otero County Sheriff's Department, located in La Junta, east of Pueblo, Colorado. "She was really friendly and nice", 15-year-old Talia Zamir said. "And that's what makes everything so heartbreaking, honestly". A GoFundMe campaign has been set up for the family.
