The FDNY said that six firefighters suffered injuries.
Almost two decades ago, Trump, then one of the Big Apple's most prominent real estate moguls, lobbied against Mayor Rudy Giuliani-era legislation that considered whether sprinklers should be installed in all residential buildings after two fatal fires in Brooklyn and Manhattan.
"The rest of the building had a considerable amount of smoke", the New York City Fire Department said.
Some fire-safety advocates pushed for a requirement that older apartment buildings be retrofitted with sprinklers when New York City passed a law requiring them in new residential towers in 1999 but officials in the administration of then-mayor Rudy Giuliani said that would be too expensive.
Four fire fighters were injured in the incident. Before moving to the White House, Mr. Trump, the first lady and Barron Trump lived in the triplex penthouse apartment, which occupies sections of floors 56-58, according to Forbes.
A fire has broken out at Trump Tower in NY, with black smoke and flames seen billowing from one of the upper storeys.
CNN reported that the upper residential floors of Trump Tower - including the 50th floor destroyed by fire - are not equipped with sprinklers.
No members of the Trump family were in the tower at the time of the blaze.
Trump Tower, named for the 45th president, is also the headquarters of the Trump Organization and was the campaign nerve center for Donald Trump when he ran on the Republican ticket in the 2016 presidential election.
Nigro said units went up with the Secret Service to check Trump's residence. About 200 firemen and emergency workers were at the scene of the blaze on the 50th floor.
Smoke reached other parts of the building, according to Nigro.
Despite not receiving a notification from the skyscraper's management team to evacuate, the terrified 76-year-old managed to make it out alive.
Meanwhile, another resident, Lalitha Masson, described barricading herself and her husband in their 36-floor apartment.
