Well Apple appears to be preparing an upgraded set of AirPods for launch this year. This version of the AirPods is internally known as B288, and will include the new Apple-designed wireless chip for managing Bluetooth connections as well.
Apple's second generation AirPods are reportedly in the works and will include "Hey Siri" support instead of requiring a tap before giving voice commands. It's not clear whether the upcoming earbuds will feature the W2 chip first released in the Apple Watch Series 4 or an entirely new chip (a W3 perhaps?).
With the current generation of AirPods retailing at around $160, they're on the high end as far as earbuds go.
AirPods have proven to be one of Apple's most successful products since launching almost two years ago. Additionally, the updated AirPods will be water-resistant and able to survive splashes and rain, although it is unlikely that they will be able to handle full submersion.
With the Airpods doing pretty well as of lately, placing them on an similar update cycle as other Apple devices makes ideal sense.
According to the report, Apple's new 2018 AirPods will feature at least two big upgrades. It shall not, however, be equipped to function when submerged in water.
The 2018 model may receive a "Hey, Siri" voice command, while the 2019 model may be water resistant.
To play it safe, Bloomberg adds that "Apple's plans could change or be delayed". Apple's W1 chip allows them to pair seamlessly with iPhones and iPads, and Apple's compact AirPod carrying case charges the headphones when they're not in use.
It's true that 2019 AirPods refresh is a long way from now.
