He was arrested for unlawfully carrying a weapon and trespassing.
Police found him dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Police on Sunday arrested a man they say was found with several guns and ammunition in his Hyatt Regency hotel room downtown.
"The safety and security of our guests and colleagues is our top priority, and consistent with the hotel's prepared security plans, heightened measures are in place on New Year's Eve", hotel manager Tom Netting said in a statement reported by the Houston Chronicle.
The officer called for what's been described as urgent backup around 1:30 a.m. when his attempts to subdue the man failed.
Houston police say they don't believe an intoxicated man arrested for having several guns in his hotel room meant to use the weapons. They seized an AR-15, a shotgun, a handgun and ammunition, Lt. Gordon Macintosh said. Investigators say he was by himself and they are trying to figure out why he had the weapons.
Police said the man is jailed.
The Hyatt Houston is in the heart of the city, and the man's room reportedly overlooked a planned New Years Eve celebration which was advertised on the hotel's website. The name of the suspect is not being released at this time.
Police are still investigating the incident.
