Embattled Rep. John Conyers, D-Michigan, has announced Tuesday that he is retiring and has endorsed his son, John Conyers III to run for his seat.

Conyers' attorney Arnold Reed tweeted Monday that he and the congressman will appear on the 102.7 FM Mildred Gaddis radio show on Tuesday at 10:15 a.m.to announce the Detroit Democrat's decision on whether he plans to stay in Congress. Last week, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and other Democratic leaders called for his resignation.

In an amended statement released to 7 Action News last week, Conyers said, "I expressly and vehemently denied the allegations made against me, and continue to do so". Conyers has repeatedly denied claims of sexual harrassment and misconduct by staffers. Another former staff member accused Conyers of sexual misconduct and filed a lawsuit, but dropped the suit when the court refused to seal the case.

The revelations against Conyers came amid a flurry of allegations of sexual misconduct against several of his colleagues in both the House and Senate, including Reps. The committee's website lists Conyers still as a member.

Conyers, who was first elected in 1964 and went on to become a founding member in 1971 of the Congressional Black Caucus, easily won re-election past year to his 27th term in the heavily Democratic district in and around Detroit. Ian Conyers, a MI state senator and the grandson of Conyers' brother, said he also plans to run for the seat held by his 88-year-old great-uncle. Conyers settled a wrongful dismissal claim in 2015 with a former employee who said he fired her because she said no to his sexual advances. Four other women have signed affidavits saying Conyers sexually harassed them when they worked for him as well.

Top Democrats, including Pelosi, have also called for. Conyers' congressional career, which spanned more than 50 years, included voting for articles of impeachment against President Richard Nixon.

Conyers became an icon during the civil rights movement.

In recent years, Conyers lent his name and clout to a series of progressive bills, not least the Expanded and Improved Medicare For All Act. "I think we have to recognize and be able to hold the dueling possibilities that somebody can be a great man and have done great things for our country and for civil rights but also have done awful things that require accountability".

"I think there should be a complete disclosure and revealing to all of the citizens of the country of what your federal legislators are doing or not doing and any cost that may have been incurred as a result of that", added Conyers. He had previously served on the staff of former Rep. John Dingell, D-Mich. Rep. Ruben Kihuen (D-NV) to resign after BuzzFeed reported that, as a candidate, Kihuen allegedly sexually harassed his campaign finance director. As you know his health is not the best.
