As the actor's son announced the death of his father on Twitter, actors, writers, directors and other users of the social media platform responded to the news and offered their condolences.
Rance Howard, whose acting career spanned more 60 years in film and television, died Saturday.
Rance Howard was also seen in the movie called Broken Memories, which follows a story about a son struggling with his father's Alzheimer's. "Today he passed at 89", the 63-year-old wrote, referring to his brother Clint Howard, who is also an actor. He talked of his father's "ability to balance ambition with great personal integrity" and wrote "his passion for acting changed the course of our family history". "We love & miss U Dad".
Howard was married to actor Jean Speegle Howard, who died in 2000.
The elder Howard also was the father of actor Clint Howard and grandfather of actresses Bryce Dallas Howard and Paige Howard. Our thoughts go out to his family and friends during this hard time.
Rance appeared in several films directed by his son Ron Howard including A Beautiful Mind, Apollo 13, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Parenthood and Splash.
"He's had a 65-year career where he has never broken out as a movie star, he's never made the money that people dream of, and yet he's carved out this incredibly unique and remarkable and lovely career of a character actor". "His loss diminishes us". "A stand-up guy who worked 'til the end".
Rance Howard has a few upcoming projects that he had already completed, as well as some in post-production, and some in pre-production.
