"I think theres definitely a legitimacy to the (rankings), but it doesnt matter where we are right now", Canes coach Mark Richt told reporters in Miami on Tuesday.
While the first playoff rankings won't be released until Tuesday night, a look at this week's rankings show the conference is on the outside looking in, as Clemson now sits at No. 5 and Miami - the only unbeaten team left in the ACC - comes in at No. 6.
Iowa State is one of four teams with two victories over teams rated in this week's CFP poll: No. 2 Georgia, No. 5 Notre Dame, No. 6 Clemson.
Georgia already has wins against Notre Dame and No. 16 Mississippi State. Even Notre Dame's "easy games" over the next four weeks are against teams that now have winning records. Georgia is tops followed by Alabama, then Notre Dame and lastly, Clemson. It's worth noting that ESPN analyst Booger McFarland said if both teams got to the championship game with unbeaten records, the only way both teams make the playoffs is if Alabama wins. UCF (7-0) and 7-1 Memphis (No. 23) were the only Group of Five teams in the top 25. Do you believe the committee would turn away these teams if they went 13-0?
The final rankings that will determine the participants in the College Football Playoff semifinals come out December 3. The three one loss teams directly behind them now all have plenty of opportunities to make an impression on the committee.
This is the fourth season of the playoff, and until now Georgia had been a non-factor in the process. However, they will have the opportunity to face both Georgia and Alabama at home later this month.
The top four teams in the final CFP rankings will advance to the College Football Playoff, with the top seed facing the No. 4 seed in one semifinal and the Nos.
It will be interesting to see if Clemson can pick up a much-needed victory this Saturday at NC State to help their case as we wind down the season. Ohio State is No. 3 in the Associated Press poll, five spots ahead of the Sooners.
I can't say I knew MSU would be ranked because I'm obviously not on the committee, but I felt pretty good about it. Still, it's favorable to be considered in that top four this early on into the year and every team that makes it is striving to stay there.
"We all just watched it as a team just now", Oklahoma linebacker Ogbonnia Okoronkwo said.
