2015 - The New York Yankees clinched an AL wild-card spot, ending a two-year absence from the postseason by beating the Boston Red Sox 4-1.
If Boston and NY wind up even, they will play a one-game tiebreaker Monday at Yankee Stadium for the division crown and the loser will go to the wild-card game. The Red Sox were crushed by the Astros last night by a score of 12-2 and looked like a shell of the team that cruised to a lead in the division in the second half of the season.
The AL West champion Astros won their fifth consecutive game and posted their 100th victory of the season.
Boston was playing from behind from the get-go as starter Eduardo Rodriguez loaded the bases in the first inning before giving up a two-out, bases clearing double to Marwin Gonzalez and it was all downhill from there. But with the Fenway Park crowd rooting for a rally, Rafael Devers grounded out to end it, with Ken Giles getting his 34th save. We've got a couple games left. For the Astros, Jose Altuve is 6-for-14 (.429) and Jake Marisnick 4-for-12 (.333) with two homers off Pomeranz, who is 1-2 with a 4.09 ERA in 11 games, six starts, against the Astros lifetime. Matt Belisle notched his ninth save with a ideal ninth inning for the Twins, who will visit NY or Boston on Tuesday in the AL wild-card game.
While we're not ready to say Price will be as effective in the playoffs as Miller was, the point is he has an opportunity to play a huge role even if he's not starting games. After Kyle Schwarber struck out, Happ drove his 24th home run to left.
Phillies starter Ben Lively (4-7, 4.26 ERA) closed his rookie season in the big leagues with a win, throwing six innings of two-run baseball without walking a batter. Bettis (2-4) allowed 1 run over 7 innings, retiring the final 14 batters he faced. The Blue Jays also might, as the team has a chance to not finish last place in the AL East. He allowed a two-out, three-run double to Marwin Gonzalez in the first, then a two-run homer to Alex Bregman in the second. Four relievers combined to blank Boston on one hit.
But no one told the Astros, who in any case seem nearly incapable of losing at the present moment. If they win with rookie German Marquez pitching against the Dodgers, or Milwaukee loses at St. Louis, the Rockies claim a berth and will play at Arizona in the NL wild-card game Wednesday.
From there, Aroldis Chapman pitched a 1-2-3 ninth with one strikeout for his 22nd save. Mitch Moreland was 1-for-3 with a double, a walk and a run for the Red Sox. The Brewers stayed alive with a 5-3 win over the Cardinals but were unable to gain any ground on the Rockies, who closed their magic number to 1 with a 9-1 win over the Dodgers at Coors Field.
The Rays got three runs on sacrifice flies, two in the seventh inning from Curt Casali and Brad Miller after a solo home run by Logan Morrison, his 38th of the season.
Vogt was 2-for-4 for the Brewers, delivering their first three runs.
Kershaw is 18-4 with a league-leading 2.21 ERA.
