Sixteen-year-old Devy Saldivar wrote "No sleep & anxiety, please let this pass sooner", around 5:30 a.m. on Sunday.
Samuel Saldivar told deputies he was in his brother's van rescuing his parents and relatives from their flooded home Sunday when the van was tossed by a strong current into the bayou as it crossed a bridge.
Sammy Saldivar, the son of Manuel and Belia Saldivar, was driving the vehicle when it plunged into the bayou, his brother Ric told CNN.
"Pasadena ISD's heart is heavy as we have learned that four Pasadena ISD students and two of their great-grandparents were swept away by floodwaters of Greens Bayou while trying to escape the floodwaters of Harvey", the statement said.
"He's still blaming himself", Ric Saldivar said. "We were able to retrieve the van and pull it out of water and we can confirm that four other individuals are in the back of the truck". Ric Saldivar didn't think they had much time left. He immediately called authorities, Gonzalez said. That's what he keeps hearing in his head.
Sheriff's Office spokesman Jason Spencer had told the Houston Press on Monday that, after rescuing Saldivar, deputies returned to search for the van or bodies in the water, but could not find the van or the family. The driver escaped, but his parents and four children were trapped.
Harvey weakened to a tropical depression on Wednesday night, the US National Hurricane Center said, but warned that "catastrophic and life threatening flooding will continue in and around Houston, Beaumont/Port Arthur, eastward into southwest Louisiana for the rest of the week".
Saldivar believes her husband's parents, Manuel Saldivar, 84, and Belia Saldivar, 81, drowned along with her grandchildren: Daisy, Xavier, Dominic and Devy.
Sammy yelled out to them to go to the back of the van and open the door, but they never made it.
A GoFundMe page has been set up for Sammy and his family. He also said he discovered the grandparents' bodies inside the vehicle. "I'm sure they couldn't reach it", Ric said. Relatives said they could not really begin to grieve until it was found and their worst fears were confirmed. "They are asking for privacy", he said.
"Sammy told me he panicked and he got scared". Of this tragedy, she said, "These were our babies".
