Lawyers for Uber Technologies Inc.co- founder Travis Kalanick are facing off before a DE judge with venture capital firm Benchmark, the company's largest shareholder, which is attempting to oust him from the company's board.
Khosrowshahi, who will attend an all-hands meeting Wednesday at Uber headquarters with his new employees, was candid about the challenges he will face in a note to the employees he is leaving behind at Expedia.
In his remarks Wednesday, Khosrowshahi said his plan is to focus on Uber's core business and "pay the bills" while also working to "take big shots". Khosrowshahi isn't as popular as some others who have achieved star power and are big names in Silicon Valley, but is believed to be a flawless fit.
The San Francisco-based startup confirmed late Tuesday that Khosrowshahi will replace ousted chief Travis Kalanick.
Kalanick's lawyers have also objected to Benchmark's request for a so-called "status quo" order that would temporarily bar the former CEO from filling two open Uber board seats.
Kalanick frequently recounts how the idea behind Uber was born, when he and a colleague were attending a technology conference in Paris in 2008 and failed to find a taxi on a cold night.
"Dara came to America at nine years old when his family escaped Iran on the eve of the Iranian Revolution", Uber said in its message to employees.
Expedia works with auto rental companies, for instance; Uber has a deal with Hertz, and there's a potential for rental auto companies to play a bigger role in managing autonomous vehicles in the future.
Kalanick, who remains on the Uber board and was involved in hiring Khosrowshahi, welcomed his replacement. Khosrowshahi also needs to find executives to fulfill key roles, such as a chief financial officer. But in the past year, Expedia's stock has risen more than 26% and Khosrowshahi has a lot of experience working in travel and transportation.
Khosrowshahi proposed to his wife, Sydney, during a visit to Angkor Wat temples in Cambodia, and they have four children, according to Uber. And, he wrote, "I have to tell you I am scared. He's made outstanding acquisitions at Expedia, which I think will be a big part of Uber's future". The board formally introduced the new CEO in an email to the company on Tuesday.
People who have worked with Mr Khosrowshahi said he evolved from being a tough deal-maker at investment bank Allen & Co into a well-rounded executive who still loves the deal but can also make peace with government regulators and compromise where needed - both skills required by Uber.
