U.S. forces carried out a successful test Sunday of a missile-interception system, military officials said.
The Missile Defense Agency (MDA) said Sunday that the USA has now effectively blocked test targets 15 times for its THAAD weapon framework, however the most recent test included a medium-go rocket, and not the long-run kind being tried out of North Korea.
"A medium-range target ballistic missile (MRBM) was air-launched by a U.S. Air Force C-17 over the Pacific Ocean", the announcement says further, adding that part of the THAAD system stationed in Alaska pinpointed and intercepted the target.
The director of the U.S. Missile Defense Agency said the test would help the U.S. "stay ahead of the evolving threat".
The President's comments come a day after North Korea test-fired another Ballistic Missile test.
"The whole U.S. mainland" is now within reach, state media quoted North Korean leader Kim Jong Un as saying.
China has said it does little to deter the North's missile threat while destabilizing regional security balance.
The THAAD system is capable of intercepting ballistic missiles inside or outside the atmosphere. The last time the US tested THAAD, earlier this month, it said it successfully intercepted an intermediate-range missile target.
The THAAD system in South Korea is operational and has achieved initial intercept capability.
North Korea said the "whole US mainland is within reach".
U.S., President Donald Trump had condemned the launch branding it as "reckless and dangerous".
Following North Korea's second ICBM test, in a show of strength, the U.S. Army said they conducted a live-fire exercise using surface-to-surface missiles with the South Korean military.
Hours later, the US then flew two B-1B bombers over the Korean peninsula in a show of force after the North Korean missile tests, the Air Force said in a statement on Sunday.
He assured that the USA will take all necessary steps to ensure the security of the American homeland and protect its allies in the region.
The mission of the Missile Defense Agency is to develop and deploy a layered ballistic missile defense system to defend the United States, its deployed forces, allies and friends from ballistic missile attacks of all ranges in all phases of flight, the release said. China has dramatically increased its sphere of influence over the region in recent years by expanding its Naval forces across man-made islands that span large parts of the South China Sea.
