Michael Carrick insists he is not thinking about a reunion with Cristiano Ronaldo following suggestions the Portugal great is keen on a return to Manchester United.

United insiders claim the 32-year-old has since rented the £3m mansion out to the likes Luke Shaw, who was reportedly paying £10,000 a month to rent out the pad.

The legendary forward has scored 118 goals in 292 appearances for United before making his way to Real in 2009, where he has broken all records to become the club's all-time greatest scorer.

Speaking to Sky Sports on when he plans to retire, Michael said, "I haven't got an age in mind really, I need to just take it year by year,". "He's the best player on the planet at the moment", said Ferdinand who played for United between 2002 and 2014. I've been lucky enough to see that up close and I've taken things from that and tried to learn from it. "It might take me as long as Giggsy, but I'm not too sure", he said.

Carrick is happy with the positive momentum United generated in winning two trophies during Jose Mourinho's first season in charge and is now targeting a Champions League challenge in 2017-18.

United had a fairly decent season in 2016/17 where they won the League Cup and the Europa League but finished sixth in the league - something Carrick believes the club can improve upon. "You want to be playing at the top and challenging the best teams", he added.

Former England and Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand on Thursday said the prospect of Cristiano Ronaldo returning to the Premier League side would be a "fairytale" for fans.

He said: "We are looking up and we are looking to achieve something this year and win more trophies".
