Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton, of Great Britain, holds up a racing helmet of former F1 driver Ayrton Senna after winning pole position at the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal, Saturday, June 10, 2017.
Hamilton's third victory of the 2017 season after a performance to forget in Monaco saw him trim Sebastian Vettel's world championship lead to 12 points after his key title rival battled back to finish a hard day in fourth.
It was a joyous day for race victor Lewis Hamilton and for hometown favourite Lance Stroll at the Canadian Grand Prix on Sunday. "It was really down to the team, great minds working together, communicating". I hope this can continue throughout the year.
There are likely to be no shortage of heated recriminations in the Force India garage, with the pacier Ocon, who eventually finished behind Perez in sixth, furious that the team did not swap the duo around as he targeted a podium place.
An emotional Hamilton said: "I am shaking... Wow..."
"I've got the stamp, I posted it the other day", he said, before a prod from Vettel at his side made him see the unintended pun.
The incident ended both their days and brought out the safety car.At the restart Verstappen attacked Hamilton hard, nearly making a pass that would have changed the race.
"Obviously, the beginning of the race didn't go our way, but I was still believing that we could fight back and get a podium so, at the end when I came back to that group, I was fairly confident but was one lap short". There was no stone left unturned: aero, mechanical balance, set-up work, the tyres themselves, the way the drivers drove the vehicle. However, with Bottas also attacking Vettel on the inside on Turn 1, the Ferrari driver was in a fix and ended up damaging front wing against the Red Bull's rear wheel.
"I was pushing flat out and when you're chasing other cars you lose quite a lot of grip, then you're sliding, so a different race for us today".
Not since the heyday of Hamilton's childhood hero Ayrton Senna's intense rivalry with his McLaren team-mate Alain Prost almost 30 years ago has a battle for glory so comprehensively captured the imagination.
"We've been working very hard over the last two weeks to rectify the issues we had with the auto", said Hamilton.
"The race actually felt very reminiscent of 2007, in terms of how it unfolded".
A technical glitch for Raikkonen promoted Vettel to sixth before he took fifth position after Ocon ran off the road at Turn One with four laps remaining.
Vettel was not particularly slow out of the starting blocks, but as Valtteri Bottas dived underneath the German, and then Verstappen raced around the outside, the driver who had finished either first or second at every round of the season so far was suddenly on the back foot.
