Mickelson, who will celebrate his 47th birthday the following day, has endured a number of near-misses in the US Open, finishing runner-up a remarkable six times with four further top-10 finishes.
Phil Mickelson has made a decision to skip the US Open later this month in order to attend his daughter's high school graduation.
Mickelson has appeared in every U.S. Open that he's been eligible for since he joined the PGA Tour in 1994.
"You never know. Maybe something freaky will happen ... something happens with the commencement time-wise". I wanted to make sure they [the USGA] had enough notice to accommodate it, so that's why I'm saying something today.
Phil Mickelson is a Hall of Famer by any measure. "It doesn't look good for me playing, but I'm really excited by this moment in my family's life".
He said Amanda is the school president and the valedictorian. "I'm always holding out hope".
The five-time major victor who has never won the U.S. Open said he's been aware of the conflict for about six months. "It wasn't really something that we discussed, because it really wasn't much of a decision". He and wife Amy are the parents of Amanda (17), Sophia (15) and Evan (14), and Phil again left no doubt as to his priorities Saturday.
This is the same daughter who almost caused Mickelson to miss the 1999 U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2, where he carried a beeper with him and pledged to leave in the middle of the tournament even if he were leading.
