There's so much wrong with this, I don't know where to begin.

Manning's clemency application to Obama maintained his belief that he was unfairly sentenced to such a long period in prison, saying, "I have never made any excuses for what I did. I'm figuring things out right now - which is exciting, awkward, fun, and all new for me", she said.

Over the years, Manning, who has had a Twitter account since 2013, has remained vocal about her imprisonment, transition, and politics.

But, in January this year, former US President Barack Obama commuted her sentence in one of his last acts in the White House.

Beginning in February, WikiLeaks publicized the documents Manning sent, causing an uproar and giving the outlet the notoriety to push more classified information into the public eye. During that time, she downloaded some 400,000 classified files concerning the Iraq War, more than 90,000 from the war in Afghanistan, a quarter-million diplomatic emails, classified videos of usa airstrikes and classified files from the prison in Guantanamo Bay.

The money will pay for Manning's living expenses for her first year out of prison. After her parents' divorce, Manning moved with her mother to Wales, where she repressed her sexuality and was mocked for her effeminate ways. Manning added, though, that she didn't plan for the released documents to harm the any way.

From graphic videos of USA military assaults in Iraq and Afghanistan, to candid comments by heads of state, secrets leaked by transgender army private Chelsea Manning caused Washington major embarrassment and upset relations with its allies. In that environment, Manning struggled, and twice attempted suicide.

"When I first wrote to Chelsea at the military prison in Kansas, she could not be filmed, nor could I communicate with her in any way other than through letters", Hawkins said in a statement.

U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates said in November 2010 that the impact of WiKiLeaks releasing diplomatic cables (from Manning's leak) was "significantly overwrought" by others, noted NPR.

The government paid for hormone treatment while he was in prison, and he's eligible for sex reassignment surgery to be paid for unless the appeal for his conviction is denied.

Manning, who was arrested in 2010, filed a transgender rights lawsuit in prison and attempted suicide twice a year ago, according to her lawyers.

"PVT Manning is statutorily entitled to medical care while on excess leave in an active duty status, pending final appellate review", the Army said in a statement Wednesday.

Ahead of Manning's release, a group of musicians released a compilation album with all proceeds to go to the former soldier as she starts a new life.
