It is exceedingly clear to anyone who pays attention to the news for, like five minutes a day that this commission is nothing more than an attempt to tend to Trump's continually-bruised ego more than anything else. It is expected the Commission will spend the next year completing its work and issue a report in 2018.
This comes after POTUS signed an Executive Order to implement a commission to examine voter fraud in federal elections.
Remember, this was around the time Trump praised the now fired Comey for launching an investigation into Clinton's emails. "The objective is to go where the facts lead us". Trump won the presidency with a 306-232 Electoral College victory despite getting 3 million fewer popular votes than Clinton.
Academic experts and election officials say there was no evidence of any widespread voter fraud in the 2016 presidential race.
Critics said the commission's findings will be used to justify unnecessary restrictions on the right to vote.
Yet research has repeatedly shown that voter fraud is a non-issue.
The commission will look at allegations of improper voting and fraudulent voter registration in states and across the nation.
"Over the last twelve years, New Mexicans have unfortunately endured multiple partisan witch hunts meant to root out alleged rampant voter fraud, but none of them turned up any evidence of widespread or systemic fraud". But Kobach won't be leaving his post in Kansas.
The ACLU is representing some Kansas voters in a lawsuit against the state's voter registration requirements.
Kobach said it's too early to judge the commission.
Matt Dunlap, Maine's Democratic secretary of state, told TPM he would be "the first to speak up" if the panel was used as a "trojan horse" to restrict access to the ballot box.
"Putting an extremist like Mr. Kobach at the helm of this commission is akin to putting an arsonist in charge of the fire department", Schumer, a Democrat from NY, said in a statement.
If all this commission does is focus on the narrow complaints from Trump and Kobach about the 2016 election, then it's not likely to improve the debate.
These "voter crime" convictions weren't exclusively voter fraud, but also included voter intimidation, vote buying and registration fraud.
"Skeptical doesn't even begin to describe our view of this", Ho said. And many of those who do care find themselves barred through burdensome voter-ID laws or have the power of their votes diluted through race-based gerrymandering. He is often cited as the chief architect of what Arizona's SB 1070, which was passed in 2010 and was criticized as encouraging the profiling of Latinos and other minorities. A spokesman for Pence said the full commission would be announced at a later date. Pence's office did not immediately respond to questions on Thursday.
Kris Kobach, the Kansas secretary of state, who has played a leading role in the drive to crack down on undocumented immigrants, will be appointed as vice president of the commission.
Kobach has stood by Trump's claims that millions of people voted illegally in November.
Kobach has provided no hard evidence, however.
"If President Trump truly wants to boost Americans' confidence in the integrity of our elections, he should stop making false claims of rampant voter fraud. I don't believe I got one", he said in January. He was photographed taking a plan for the agency into a November 20 meeting with Trump. Kobach has long claimed that there's widespread illegal voting by noncitizens in the USA, despite the lack of evidence.
The Times reports that the A.C.L.U has already filed a legal request seeking records that would prove that these claims are anything other than the sputtering delusions of a sore loser. And the judges who ruled against his cockamamie executive order on immigration.
The city was sued over that measure, and in 2013, the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a lower-court decision against Farmers Branch.
