"The People's Liberation Army Rocket Force conducted tests of new types of missiles somewhere in the Bohai in recent days, and achieved desired results", the ministry said.
This proposal is supported by Russian Federation, which has urged Washington and Seoul to reconsider their decision to station THAAD on the peninsula, saying it serves as a "destabilizing factor" that undermines the security and deterrent capacity of adjacent states, such as China, and could tip the existing military balance in the tense region. It is the place that separates China from the Korean Peninsula.
North Korea has unveiled what it claims are satellite images of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defence (THAAD) system which was deployed by the United States military in South Korea, Seoul officials said on Thursday.
"The missiles might be launched from the northeast to the east by the Rocket Force, with a range of 2,000km or above".
"Considering the type of missile and the test location it is evident that we conducted a firing experiment targeting aircraft carriers, and the warhead possibly featured an electromagnetic pulse that could destroy a carrier's command system, as well as the THAAD system", Song said. Military experts believe the projectile was likely a DF-26 intermediate range missile being developed to sink warships, including USA aircraft carriers. It included Dongfeng-21D missile, the anti- ship ballistic missile described as the "carrier killer".
The TV programme also accused the U.S. of speeding up the deployment before the conservative government in South Korea handed over power.
"The test missile might be a new modified DF-26A anti-ship missile launched from a marine weapons testing ground in southern Liaoning", Wong said.
According to the South Korean Navy, the drills were aimed at deterring North Korean provocations and strengthening the military readiness of the Korea-US alliance. However, it is possible that the test may also have been planned well in advance.
