If there was any doubt as to who is the biggest Mexican boxing star before May 6, Canelo Alvarez shattered any remaining doubt. Alvarez was dominant from the opening round and never looked back until the final round as Chavez failed to win a single round for a shutout victory.
"Triple-G, you are next my friend", Alvarez proclaimed in the ring.
The 26-year-old now lays claim to victories over Chavez Jr., Shane Mosley, Miguel Cotto and Amir Khan, but the biggest crack of his quickly expanding legacy has been his reluctance to fight Golovkin.
"I've had hard fights", Alvarez said, "and that will no doubt be a tough fight".
"This is the biggest fight in boxing", Golovkin said. But the fight De La Hoya had teased was long in coming: He said a verbal agreement was in place for the fight to occur in September 2017.
There was tension between the two fighters along with political overtones as a commercial for the fight depicted both boxers bursting through President Donald Trump's proposed border wall. "He wouldn't throw punches".
De La Hoya, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions said the fight between Alvarez and Golovkin is, "signed, sealed and delivered".
"We are extremely proud we can have this fight with Triple G for you in September, which will be one of the biggest fights anticipated in recent years. Good luck to Canelo in September". [Trainer] Nacho [Beristain] told me to do that but the strategy didn't work. "I couldn't throw more punches".
The exciting spectacle felt very much like it was borrowed from the world of sports entertainment.
Gennady Golovkin: "of Course, Canelo will be the biggest challenge in my career". We did start negotiations a while back and halted negotiations for about a month, and then we started negotiating two weeks ago, and it got done a few days ago.
Lucas Matthyesse, a hard-hitting welterweight who once held an interim junior welterweight title, continued to show his power by stopping Emmanuel Taylor in the fifth round of their welterweight bout that was slated for 10 rounds. I wanted to try something new, I never sit down in sparring and I didn't want to sit here. "I've shown I can do lots of things in the ring, anything", he added.
In the co-main event, former IBF middleweight champion David Lemieux of Montreal took a unanimous decision over stubborn Mexican Marco Reyes in a catchweight bout at 163 pounds.
