Eman Ahmed Abd El Aty, said to be the heaviest woman in the world, landed at Mumbai's worldwide Terminal 2 airport at 3.05 a.m. on Saturday.
Her request for a visa was initially rejected, prompting Dr Lakdawala in December to tweet a request for help to India's foreign minister Sushma Swaraj.
Eman is estimated to weigh 500 kg, and has spent 25 years restricted to her house in Alexandria, spending the past two years totally confined to bed.
She has suffered paralysis in right leg and right arm which has left her completely immobile even in her bed.
But today she has been lifted by crane into a specially adapted surgery in a hospital in the Indian city of Mumbai.
Many doctors have reviewed Eman's case, including in Greece, but she has continued to gain weight, despite having no increase in appetite or food consumption.
MUMBAI: The world's heaviest woman, Eman Ahmed from Egypt, was admitted to Mumbai's Saifee Hospital early on Saturday.
An Egyptian woman who weighs almost 80 stone flown today to India to have life-saving weight reduction surgery after intervention from the country's foreign minister ensured her a visa.
A dedicated team of doctors led by Lakdawala, bariatric surgeon, a cardiologist, a cardiac surgeon, an endocrinologist and a chest physician will extensively examine the patient for the next 48 hours which will help them determine the next steps in course of her treatment. To prepare her for the flight, the team of doctors have been in Egypt for the last ten days to optimise the conditions for her travel. She will leave for Egypt thereafter. She will undergo blood tests, urine test, electro cardiogram and complete physical examination for the next two days.
It is not specified which procedure the woman is undergoing, but any of them can bring her what she needs to change and save her life. She is being transported by a fully equipped truck to Saifee Hospital where a special room has been created for her.
Dr. Muzaffal Lakdawala said: "We had taken all the precautions possible to ensure that Eman's journey to India is accomplished without incident".
According to her doctors, Ahmed will be put under observation for a month before her surgery. After the surgery, Eman could lose around 100 kilos within the six months that she will spend in Mumbai.
