Harrison Ford, who was Fisher's on- and off-screen love at one time, called her "one-of-a-kind...brilliant, original, amusing and emotionally fearless".

Asked if this was a "slap in a face" from her then-lover, Fisher said of Ford: "He's not a very verbal person, but when he is, he's very witty".

Mr Ford, 74, played the role of Hans Solo opposite Ms Fisher's Princess Leia in four Star Wars films and reportedly had an affair with the actress.

Born in Los Angeles in October 1956, the daughter of actress Debbie Reynolds and singer Eddie Fisher became an global star overnight with the release of "Star Wars" in 1977.

On Saturday, the actor also released a statement upon hearing of Fisher's health emergency: "I'm shocked and saddened to hear the news about my dear friend".

Continuing: "She was loved by the world and she will be missed profoundly".

She died on Tuesday morning after suffering a heart attack onboard a flight from London to Los Angeles last week. "Our entire family thanks you for your thoughts and prayers".

The 60-year-old had been in Britain to promote her new book The Princess Diarist and the latest series of her upcoming Amazon show Catastrophe.

Fisher appeared in the original Star Wars trilogy and only recently in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, a sequel released a year ago.

The actress promised in her first agony aunt column for the British Guardian newspaper in June to "provide solicited advice, based on a life filled with pratfalls and accidents".

Fisher was briefly married to singer/songwriter Paul Simon in the 1980s.

It was that advocacy that Cho mentions that really defined Fisher's later years. Among the films she lists as having worked on were Hook, Sister Act and Lethal Weapon 3. Her daughter Billie, who is also an actress, comes from her relationship with talent agent Bryan Lourd.
